Herinneringen aan ingrijpende gebeurtenissen blijven ons beroeren, vaak tot lang na de feiten. Ze kleuren het publieke bewustzijn en dwingen ons tot nadenken: welke plaats geven we aan collectieve herinneringen? Kunnen we eruit leren? Het is een boek vol inspiratie, met verhelderende toelichtingen, diepgravende focusteksten, didactische suggesties en praktijkvoorbeelden. Veel aandacht gaat daarbij naar 'dragers van herinneringen'. Games, films, strips of kunst brengen het verleden tastbaar in beeld. Een vakantie in Congo zit er voor weinig Belgen in. Te riskant, te duur en te beperkte rondreismogelijkheden. Maar in België naar Congo reizen: dat kan je al wandelend en met het openbaar vervoer. Dat is te danken aan Congolees erfgoed dat hier is bewaard gebleven. Dit boek vertelt het verhaal achter de monumenten en ander koloniaal erfgoed. Het is een tocht door heel ons land, van Aarlen tot Blankenberge, van Diksmuide tot Luik, en van Antwerpen en Brussel tot Gent en Oostende. Lucas Catherine voorziet de officiële koloniale geschiedschrijving van een historisch correcte voetnoot en helpt je die geschiedschrijving waar nodig van zijn voetstuk te halen. Hij maakt ook de balans op van de acties tegen koloniale monumenten en vertelt waarom we onze koloniale geschiedenis moeten herschrijven. Een andere visie op ons koloniaal verleden, want de kolonisatie heeft niet alleen massa’s mensen vermoord, de koloniale geschiedschrijving heeft ook vaak de waarheid vermoord.
